So much potential...
The location of the property was exactly what I was looking for. A small collection of cabins with direct access right next to Big Bear Lake. Fished right off their dock with some of the other occupants. Very pleasant and an amazing view. Grounds looked maintained. The "Village" and shops and grocery stores were always 4-10 minuets drive (off-season). I was surprised that appliances were new and were of quality. Kitchen had a nice large sink, some pots and pans and full assortment of cooking utensils provided along with dish cleaning supplies. A very nice oven with a center built in griddle. Metal eating utensils, nice plates and bowls and coffee cups, and even drinking glassware. I appreciate the rustic side of the decor. It perfectly fit the experience. Nice pub style table by the fireplace. The wood fireplace had a good charm to it as clearly the oldest part of the cabin. (old does not mean bad) Appropriate love seat-ish couch and rustic coffee table. Mounted TV's in a good position up in corners so don't distract. It was nice to have windows all over the place for plenty of light and with heavy curtains for privacy when needed. Plenty of towels and toiletries (TP, shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash) provided. Large and comfortable bed. Thermostat controlled wall heater and additional small electric radiator space heater for the bedroom was perfect. This was my first time staying in Big Bear and I've heard trash disposal could be an issue but the site had dumpsters so I think this a very big positive for the site.
The cleaning service must have missed where the previous occupant had over indulged and vomited over the toilet side. These things happen, so I used the app to message, and called, to report that there was still vomit residue that was missed. I spoke to someone over the phone that took the report. The property didn't get back to me till the next day, and framed it that sending housecleaning was something I would have to explicitly tell them to do. I would have appreciated a more direct response of "we will send house keeping to you, does time A or B work for you.". When they asked if I would like housekeeping, I pointed out that I was already out and about (got to get up early to fish, ya know) and I expected to be contacted at least an hour or two after I reported it the previous day right at check in. They handwaved a response that they only got it reported to them that morning so it was somehow the booking company's fault. (I had cleaned it up myself because obviously I was not going to stay with a bathroom with a slight off-smell of vomit) That was the most off-putting thing about the stay. There were other weird issues like the shower base leaked water, the microwave door could only open a couple of inches until it hit the side of the fridge. The bed was large but the bed frame was 2-3 inches too large so ended up with some stubbed toes. I think the windows could be a bit more secure. A broom and dustpan would have been appreciated. I would hardly mention these things in a review and more direct it to the property management to address.
